Why your fridge isn’t cooling — 7 common reasons

A quick list you can check before scheduling a visit. If nothing helps — book a service, I’ll come and fix it.

In my experience, most “fridge not cooling” calls come down to something simple — dirty condenser coils or blocked vents fix a surprising number of them. These seven checks are all safe to do yourself and cover the usual suspects. If the fridge is still warm afterwards, you’re likely looking at a sealed-system or control-board problem — that’s a job for a pro.

1. Dirty condenser coils. Vacuum and brush them — this alone can restore cooling.
2. Blocked vents. Don’t overpack the fridge; keep air paths clear between fridge & freezer.
3. Wrong temperature settings or demo mode. Reset to factory defaults, then set 37°F/0–4°C.
4. Bad door gaskets. If a dollar bill slides out easily — the gasket leaks and needs replacement.
5. Evaporator fan not spinning. Listen for unusual silence or tapping noises.
6. Defrost system failure. Frost build-up on the back panel suggests heater/thermostat/board issues.
7. Compressor or start device. If the unit clicks and stops — it’s time for diagnostics.
